Default Car with Spanner through it suggestions?

Iv had a car with a spanner through it for a while now..

It comes on when i start the car then goes off after about 5 minutes of the car running.

i had checked the glow plugs after i done a search on here for this same issue..

I tested them by putting one end of the multimeter on the top of them then putting the other on the engine head and they all rear 0 resistance. Im not sure if this is the correct way to test them though?

Is there anything else that could cause this to come on on start up and then go out after 4 minutes or so?

The engine never gets up to temperature either since i think the thermostats gone so that needs changing but obviously when im in traffic the temp gauge goes up... Once when this happened though the spanner light came back on then went out again after 5 minutes..

All very strange is there any way i can get some software to read this error since iv checked the EML and there are no Faults stored..

    cheers Craig

What did you use to try and read the codes? I have the software that cannot me mentioned.

As far as getting a reading of 0 ohms for each plug goes, there's something wrong there. The whole point of a glow plug is that it is a big resistor - the resistance means it heats up and does it's job. I'd have a look on youtube for glowplug testing then you can actually see someone doing it and what sort of results you should get.

well apparently its meant to be a low reading other wise it would come back as either open circuit or a very high resistance which would mean a faulty glow plug also.

maybe i had the ohms set to a higher reading instead of 200 but im pretty sure thats what i had it on.

ill test it again when i get chance maybe tomorrow at work.

i was just using some simple software to read EML codes obviously there is other software that reads other parameters.

any ideas what that spanner could mean or usual things that would bring it up.?

thanks.. my spanner is a bit strange it always comes on when starting from cold and also goes out after 5 minutes but i have had it where it comes on during driving but only for the same amount of time as what it would as if i was first starting the car.

So when you say fuel pump do you mean the high pressure fuel pump or do you mean the one thats in the tank?

If it takes 5 minutes for the spanner light to go out then i doubt that its the glow plugs, these lights usually go out after about 1/2 a mile,s driving if its glow plugs
May be the glow plug relay or another issue altogether .

sorry 5 minutes was a bit excessive, it literally does take about 1/2 a mile to go out but then like i said can come back on at different times even while driving that has only happened a few times though.
