confused Possible New Job....Conundrum Please help.

I've had a call today inviting me for interview for a job I applied for along time ago and had given up on. But I have so many things to consider, I don't know what to do.

    My current job.....

I love it. ..It's interesting and always a challenge. I get out of the office and have seen a bit of the world (my week in Brunei last November).

My Boss is great. ...When my dad took his overdose before Christmas he sorted me out with paid time off as opposed to the normal rules of unpaid time off.

My colleagues are pretty good too!

I've pretty much got a job for the next 15 - 20 years.

But today it took me two and a half hours to get to work (50 miles eachway). In two weeks I'm off to Portsmouth for 3 months working in the dockyards on a couple of ships. Great work, but too long away from me young family and expectant wife . The travel is grinding me down and the length of my site work too thats the only problem I have.

    The new job........

Office/Workshop based, though the job description is so vague I can't decide if its technical, Project management or QA!

The job is 10 minutes away!!!! At a site (RAF Sealand) that has been threatened with closure for the past 12 years!

Sounds like I am the boss over all (i.e. me) . Head office is in Luton and I guess my boss would be there too.

    Its a 6k pay rise.

I've worked at Sealand before and still know some peeps there. Not all happy memories though.

So I've got an interview in either St Ives (Cambs) or Luton next Thursday. I'll probably do an overnighter (mini meet anyone?) and see what the jobs about.
    Question is.......Would you change over?

Money ain`t everything so I would consider it carefully. I tend to change job every 2-3 years as I get fed up quick though. I would certainly go for the interview and suss it out, and 6k now will be more like 8k on the offer I would think ....

My advice would be go for the interview, get details and see how it goes.

    Go on instinct.

If it doesnt "feel" right to start with, dont do it.

My best mate transferred down to Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service years ago. He went from what I do ( normal wholetime firefighter ) to what is termed "day crewing". They gave him a rent free house 30 seconds from the station in Didcot and he was earning at least 10k pa more than I was.

Kept harping on about how good it was and that I should follow him down there.

He's now returned back up here to Scotland and has started at Edinburgh airport with the BAA Fire Service. He is so glad he is back up its unbelievable.

Money was great down in Oxford, but he never felt settled down there.

Thats why I've never moved anywhere.

You cant put a price on job satisfaction. Irrespective of how much a new job and a move could well mean to you.

Keep us updated, let us know how you get on.

As above, go for the interview, but memorise some questions to get a feel for the company.

Try to grab a chat with someone who works there as well.

If you're not sure stay where you are, you seem happy there.

    Good luck mate.

I'd have the interveiw.. see how it and they sound out over the job and your conditions.. then even if they make you the offer, you can still say no..

with the mrs and young family i can understand why you're tempted.. time like that can't be replaced easily..

and if you do come down next week, give us a bell and we'll sort out some AF stylee hospitality........

    mmmmmmmmmm...................difficult one Steve.

I went for an interview today as i am having major problems in work. I too love the job but unlike you, my bosses are not so understanding.
I'd say you have to go for the interview and then weigh up the pro's and con's afterwards. If it is meant to be, things will sort themselves out.

    Good Luck

Just a thought Brocks, have they decided what happening with the Naval bases on the south coast (Portsmouth & Devonport)?

If there is a risk of rationalisation maybe the new job could be a good option (especially with the extra £)

Defo go for the interview, best of luck

Where the navy stick their ships isn't my problem. Last I heard, Portsmouth was getting the Chop (last week). All that means is my ships will move to Plymouth and Faslane.

I'm going for the interview as it's the best way of finding the facts....Just not sure if I'm serious about it.
