    Default iTunes help.

I am getting a little frustrated with ITunes at the moment and was hoping someone could help.

I'll explain the problem. I have iTunes on my PC and everything works just as it should. But my PC is starting to play up.

So the whole of my iTunes library is backed up to an external hard drive, again everything going well.

So I decided to use our daughters PC for a while until I replace ours. So I installed iTunes and it is all OK, and then tried to import the library from our external hard drive to the PC.

Again, this all went OK. However, the problem is this.

When I open iTunes on her PC, all the albums, movies etc are all there where they should be. But if I click of an album to play it, it comes up with :-

"The song could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it"

    Then it can't find it.

But.......If I connect the USB that goes to the external hard drive, it plays everything as normal.

So it is seeing it via the external hard drive but not locally on the PC.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Seems like itunes is just linking to the drive to play the tunes, and has not copied.

Id suggest copying the music over from External Drive to the PC if you have enough space, or you can only listen to the music while the external drive is connected.

You need to import the library from the external hard drive as it is the source of the music the titles and file structure are held in the main iTunes program but internally they point to the place the file is held. They are shortcuts in effect so the source needs to present.

Thanks for your help guys! I think I have now sorted it.

On my daughters PC I tried to import directly from the external hard drive, as you say that's where the PC was trying look.

So I have removed everything, then copied from the external drive into the music file on the PC, then opened iTunes and imported the library.

So far so good, it all appears to be working, including the purchased items from iTunes.

    So thanks again to all!
