    Default Oil reading

    Hi guys

    Changed oil and filter yesterday
Left to drain for an hour from warm so can only assume it was fully drained.
    Manual says 4.5l from empty
I measured 4l in and checked and is now reding way past the max mark.
I have measure what came out to be just over 3.5l which is passable as a full drain as I I know I was low but even if there was 0.5l left in which is the most that possibly could be, the 4 I put in would be right, but the readings way out, it's about an inch higher than the max mark???
I left overnight and took the same readings this morning too

    It's the z18xer engine too.

    Help please???

you'll have to drain some out mate just loosen the sump plug (dont take it all the way out) and put summat under it to catch the oil ,take out what you think is around a litre and a half tighten sump plug then top up as nessesary hth

there may be someone with an easier way that will come along shortly ,this is the only way i can think of because you really dont want to run the car with to much oil in it.

Had this engine in my old vec b always used to fill up to just over max mark start up let the filter soak some up,that used leave it just under the max, never bothered with the book and it was on 126k when I passed it on so no problems and I still see it now trundling around the locality, ignore this post this engine wasn't in the vec b just got up and read it wrong sorry to waste your time still half asleep,I still use this method though

Cheers for the replies guys, iv had a run out in it, just a couple of miles and parked very slightly up hill in it on my drive and it reads bang on
But I did the same last night and checked level and it was way out, iv not drained any yet but it ran well.. I dnt know if I can trust the dipstick, I know absolutely max that can be in there is 5l but that would sit on the "max" mark and would be ok
I know over filling causes mass damage but I'm tempted to leave as is as I think if I'm over it must be very minimal
    What do u all think?

Wouldn't worry about it too much mate ,don't think a dealer would be as particular if you took it to them they'd just fill it to the max mark if your lucky known them slightly over and slightly under as long as its not excessively one way or another rest easy fella

Not sure on the 1.8, but on the 2.0T you have to get the engine up to full temperature, then turn it off, and then wait 5 minutes and then take a reading on the dipstick. If you wait longer, or if you take a reading from a cold engine, it'll be inaccurate.

Reminds me of the modification Toyota allegedly made when they had lots of complaints about the amount of oil their 1.8vvti engines burnt, and the consequent damage caused where owners were caught out by it, and let the oil level drop too low - rumour has it they just manufactured a new dipstick where the Max mark was higher up the stick........
