I've played a bit with Keyboards, MIDI, and computer connections.
Unsure of your budget, unless you are looking at top spec professional gear then I think you can forget USB on the keyboard itself, just look for one with standard MIDI interface connections (5 pin round DIN Plugs in and out), the USB option will probably wind up coming from the PC you connect it to once you have found a suitable PC MIDI Interface kit (to plug into one of the PC's USB connections).
Hope that helps, but unless anyone else wants to add something, a decent high street music specialist would usually be pretty helpful and give you some choices based on the options you are looking for.
Essentially though, try to plan on letting your computer provide most of the extra MIDI functions via what can be a fairly cheap computer MIDI USB interface, just need to make sure that the keyboard has MIDI in and out, and that you have a suitable PC Music program to do the extra stuff (CuBase or the likes).
    Great fun by the way

I play, but the old fashioned way with midi connections and Yamaha gear. I would suggest a long talk with the people in a good quality Music shop there are fewer and fewer around but the ones that are there offer good solid advice.

If you are serious and your child is too, then I would suggest that you invest in an 88key full size keyboard, worry less about the sounds and the toys as these can be added to via midi interface from a pc later, as it is down to the quality of the keyboard the rebound and the feel.
