    Default Irratic Heater Issue

    Hi all,

I have an '03 plate 1.8 Petrol Vectra and have a very odd situation with the heating.

When I first bought the car in the Summer is seemed like a very warm car, as even on cold the blowers were warm. Now that it's cooling down I have the opposite problem.

heater works fine and belts out hot air as the car is moving, but I noticed when I pull up to a set of traffic lights or a junction the heat gradually fades away until it blows luke warm at best.

I thought the problem was something to do with the vehicle moving, but I tried revving the engine and sure enough between idle and about 1800 revs you can feel the air getting gradually warmer and warmer as you increase the engine speed. 2000 revs and the air temp seems to max out to an expected and comfortable normal operating temerature.

I have read the threads about the air mixer/actuator - but this doesn't sound like it's something attributed to that. Anyone have any ideas, as with a 3yr old in the car his comfort is my main priority.

Could be a dodgy Water Pump. Not sure about Vec's but on BM's the Impeller becomes separated from the drive pinion and will still spin but not at the speed the pinion is driven by the belt. The faster the engine speed the more the pinion manages to force the impeller round but at idle it will pretty much just spin without moving the impeller so isn't moving the water around the engine. If this happens then the fans just cool the heater matrix water until you rev and get the water moving again.

Temperature gauge reads fine and car runs happily in the normal operating temperature range, and have had no problems with running hot or over heating.

Taking some advice on here I listened for the air mix solenoid/motor operating as I changed the temperature from hot and cold, and sure enough that works fine - or at lesast I can hear it and the air will run from cold to hot.

As I say, really odd, can sit and rev the engine between 750 tickover and around 2000 revs, and as the engine revs increase so does the blower temperature.

I've not tried this yet, but had a reply from somebody via PM who capped and disconnected the water hoses on the bulk head from the heater matrix, flushed the heater matrix, and to their amazement an amount of sludge/gunk was expelled.

They kept doing this until water seemingly ran clear, re-connected everything, fired back up and hey presto - hot air at idle.

Not tried this myself yet, but before I do any idea what the gunk is likely to be as to have that crap circulating around the cooling system can't be good abd is more of a concern to me than the cool air at idle.

Would a better option be to get it in to a garage and have a complete coolant system flush and cooling replacement?

No, not yet. Had the system drained and refilled at the garage but still get exactly the same problem.

When you say the temperature sits in the normal operating range.... It should be sat right in the middle when fully warm and when driving.

I've noticed on mine that if the engine isn't fully warm and I put the heaters on 2 then it cools the engine.

Once up to temp it's fine.

Recently had something similar on a 1.9cdti signum, On tick over it would not get warm at all but once driving it would heat up no problem and whilst moving i would have warm air, If i put my foot down hard i would get nice toasty air blown in, though if i stood at lights it was cold.

Turned out to be the water pump. The car ran at the correct temperature on the gauge to even with the pump been faulty.

if the hot air is slowly becoming cooler when the car is stationary your temp gauge would fall also which points to me that your thermostat is goosed fella either that or your water pump has failed but a failed water pump would cause the engine to over heat
VXR IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR THRILLS !
