Default MOT passed today, and all it took was...

Well, MOT passed today, and all it took was replacing...

    - Both front brake pipes
    - OSF lower control arm
    - Rear shock absorbers
    - Drop links
    - Two tyres
    - Windscreen
    - New hangers welded on to the middle and rear sections of the exhaust
    - One brake hose to strut clip
    - One bulb

And I thought I was going to have trouble...

...to be fair... the brake pipes were advisories for the last two years and I'd bottled changing them (the OSF looked a bit scary), but I quite enjoyed the job in the end. The control arm and drop links I'd changed not that long ago, so this was a buy cheap buy twice. One of the rear shocks was leaking which I hadn't noticed but they were very easy to replace and cheap enough. The exhaust hangers were anoying, why make an exhaust that outlasts it's hangers? (£20 welding at a local garge to fix). The tyres, well 35k out of a pair of Bridgestones, can't grumble at that (replaced with Neuton NT5000's)... and the windscreen...errr well... B&Q plus a piece of wood one inch too long... £120 to replace...ho hum.

hangers went on my front down pipe few months ago, was more then likely still on its factory exhaust (65000) and had loads of life left but yet the brackets failed.

I think I've finally hit my limit at 56mpg, on one return journey from work I did manage 62mpg but that was with a following wind

I did get this after the plugs, oil, air filter etc. but this could have been down to the right conditions; dry, warm, no wind, (and with the further altered driving style) for a full tank of fuel... I can now see the effect that a damp day or a strong wind has on economy...

My conclusion to the whole economy thing is driving style and tyre pressures are the big things (particularly driving style), everything else i.e. the spark plugs, oil viscosity, air filter, weight, I have no doubt have a positive effect it's just so small it hard to measure without a laboratory. I'll stick with it, I'm sure over a life time I'll save a pound or two.

Now the weather's getting cold and wet I'm down to very low 50's, so no new records until spring I think, I might try a warm air intake when it gets really cold. If you're interested driving style wise, driving without brakes (coasting, not in gear slow down) and pulse and glide will get you a good few extra mpg's, if you google them you'll get a better explanation than I can give.
