Got around to changing the oil and filter today and after taking the cover off of the oil filter i noticed that it was in lots of bits manged to get all the bits out, what would cause this to happen and anyone else had this on a 2008 1.8 vvt ?

When was the last time you changed it?
I have only had the car about a month so i have never changed it and in the service history it states that the oil and filter was changed 10,000 miles ago
Well id suggest that the filter was never changed, maybe never been changed, as service intervals are 20,000 the filter should easily make 10,000.

Whats the mileage? Chances are someone's not bothered thinking it was changed last time, and maybe the time before that it wasn't changed either. People can be lazy/work shy when they see element style filter housing, that and its pretty hard to mark those kinds of filters to check they have been changed.
It might be worth running your car for a week and changing the filter again, just in case there is anything floating around.
Mileage is just turned 75 k, yeah will do that will get a filter tomorrow and change it next week
