It depends what you want doing? Some may offer a free fault finding service, others may charge you a flat fee for X number of hours? Others will waive the initial fee if you have the repair done by them. Ring a fw up and tell them what the problem is and ask what they would charge to sort it out?

It's usually not as simple as ringing a garage and asking for x part to be replaced

as it could be a number of faults.

    whats up with it?

    cut a long story short
end jun/beg july battery light came on & lost everything - alternator failed so new one fitted plus new aux belt.. 6 weeks later battery light on again so got new battery, 2 days later battery light again so another new alternator, 6 weeks later battery light came on AGAIN!! all voltage checks when batt light is on and engine running is 14.3 .. with everything on 14.19.. battery light is tempremental and some journeys will not come on at all( can be a 30mile trip).. other times can be within a mile and its on.. its been like it for the past 4 weeks and we have done between 200-250 miles while its been like it.. i keep the multimeter in the car and everytime light comes on i check the voltage!!

I'd be hunting for a possible loose earth as you've pretty much eliminated the usual suspects.

If you're thinking earths to be at fault there should be 2(?) earths on the right of the fuse box under the bonnet, between the fuses and the wing, or on the panel near there.. are they secure?

(apologies for vagueness, the prefacelift may be laid out slightly different from mine)

When the battery light comes on use a jump lead from battery negative terminal to a decent earth point on the engine (lifting hook is ideal) and see if the light goes out.

Were these 'faulty' alternators diagnosed and fitted by the same place/person? Just find it difficult to see that an alternator failed after six weeks and if it did then surely it would have been replaced under warranty?, or was that the case (that it was under warranty)?

the alternator was changed because it had 12 months warranty so was just simply a case of swapping.. (and because when I wrote on here most answers were pointing to the alternator again).. but surely it cant be alternator as wouldnt it have packed up well before now? the auto electricians I rang today all said that even if the alternators were at fault they should have lasted more than 6 weeks,
It doesnt matter what Im doing either when the lights come on, sometimes it comes on when just driving (not using anything, nor breaking or indicators) sometimes I could have the wipers on.. sometimes just by breaking... but oddly I can be driving with everything being used, and it wont come on
