    Default 1.9 CDTI Auto whining

Recently p/x'd the wifes Zafira Life 2.2direct auto for an Astra Elite 1.9 CDTI auto as the Zaffy was guzzling the petrol. Astra seems a good little car, however we've got a couple of issues:

    1) drivers side windscreen wiprs hits the A pillar at the top of the sweep and high speed setting doesn't work. Seems like a common problem and the wiper linkages need replacing (bought the car with a 6 month warranty so this shouldn't be a problem, going to get it booked in this week to get fixed).

    more importantly:

    2) any time the car goes over about 1800 revs (so when the turbo kicks in i think!) there is a very loud whine, getting louder as the revs increase, which I can only describe as the same sort of noise as when you reverse some cars at a decent speed, sounds a bit like an electric motor!

Neither a 1.7CDTI manual Astra that we test drove or my Vectra (2.8 auto) make this noise, and I've not got much experience with diesel turbos so I don't know if this is a normal noise or not. It doesn't sound like a turbo "whistle" or any of the other noises I've heard on youtube videos of 1.9CDTIs making funny noises!

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, or just confirm that it's normal, before I have the horror of a trip to the dealers. (They denied that there where any problems with 2.2directs when I asked them to check the timing chain on my previous Vectra!)

I know this is a Vectra forum, but there's usually someone here who can help. I will ask on the Astra Owners network as well, but being new there I'm not sure what sort of responses I'll get!

Anyway, sorry for the essay, and thanks in advance!

Tyres are Bridgestone ER300, and they all seem OK, rears about 6mm tread and fronts about 4mm.

I should have said it doesn't seem to be speed related, it's definately rev related. If I keep a constant 40mph for example, but change gear to drop to about 1500 rpm the sound goes away, but if I change down and the revs go up, the noise comes back.

Those other parts sound like they'ed change noises at different speeds?

Hope that makes sense! (Also, thanks for the quick reply)

Could be, it sounds like a belt type of noise. If it is the aux belt either too tight or too loose, should I be rushing to get it fixed, or will it last a while? and will the engine go bang if it breaks?

OK thanks, that's sort of good if it is the aux belt. I'll get it booked into the dealers anyway and see what they say, you know what these places are like with a "there's a funny noise" type problems! Thanks for your help.

Hmm, I was wondering if it could be a turbo whine, but I've only been driving 3 years so haven't much experience of what cars should sound like and the only car with a turbo I've got access to listen to is my Vectra 2.8, which is quiet as a whisper, until you put your foot down

It doesn't sound like this video of a astra 1.9 turbo whine though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoGm_1tK0kk

Also, just remembered it's had a new battery fitted as the trader reckoned that a couple of times it hadn't started first time but seemed to be fixed after changing battery. Does the aux belt drive the alternator by any chance? :\
