Default 2.0DTI Lumpy & smokey in the morning, and drinking oil

    Evening all,

I need some advice, my 2003 2.0DTI (135k on the clock) is taking a while to start in the morning, it is very lumpy & chucks out quite a lot of smoke for a few seconds too.
I serviced it a short time ago (all filters & oil), and I am wondering if having air in the fuel lines could be causing the lumpyness ? I made the mistake of just taking the filter out & chucking the new one in without topping it up with diesel because I was in a rush.
The engine is fine after 20-25 seconds but it is very very lumpy initially, any advice is very appreciated ! Cheers !

I don't know anything specific to this engine, but if the problem began right after having changed the fuel filter, maybe something isn't sealed fully allowing air back into the system when left overnight? Does the car startup ok if warm and left for only a short time? If the problem is only since you've changed the filter, check everything you disconnected/connected and any seals you have disturbed.

do you get a car spanner light for about 45 seconds after start up?
If so change your glow plugs

no idea regarding the oil consumption , my 2003 dti is on 182k & doesn't use a drop of oil .
mine wasn't giving a glow plug light on a morning so had to be re programmed at the dealer ( field remedy 1579 ) even since then the glow plugs don't stop on for very long , so i find it better to cycle the glow plugs 2 or 3 times & the car starts perfect .

Sounds like the glow plugs - my 150 Diesel was lumpy as a lumpy thing for a few seconds after starting and took a while to fire up. I changed to glow plugs to brand spanking new NGK plugs and it starts on the button every time and runs smooth as silk from stone cold.
