2007 Vectra Design 1.8 vvt electrics / engine cutting out

HI,

My Vectra is cutting out at random times. The engine shuts down and all the dash controls fail and the headlights turn themselves off. Power steering goes also.

Is this likely to be the dreaded CIM or can anyone make another suggestion ?

Starting with the basics, have you inspected the battery terminals and had a good look around under the bonnet.
It could also be a loose earth wire, there are lots of earthing points under the bonnet.
It sounds more widespread that just the CIM.

Earth cable could be a good shout, I noticed the lights dimming before the entire thing cut out. Battery terminals were all tight.

Odd that the dash lights remained on.

The car has sat for 4 to 6 weeks.

Assuming that the lights go bright when the car is reved up, and this fault only occurs when you have driven it, then I would suspect the battery has a problem.
If it is over 3 years old then replacing it might be a good idea. Fit the biggest capacity battery you can afford and fit in the space.
