if it stayed at a constant temp and didnt drop back to the bottom again, i would say the thermostat is fine. Its when the needle goes up and then goes back to zero again you have a problem.

Just remember this colder weather will stop your car reaching higher tempertures when driving.

Would say that was normal. Especially if your in stop start traffic. The point with it being faulty is it went to 80 then dropped back to 0. If its fluctuating between a few degrees, then that is fine.

the way i tested my thermostat was i turned the heater ( off ) i drove off from cold start the needle went to say 80 then i got on the motorway and it flat lined if never stuck at 86-89 (as previous)

now i have a new thermostat fitted it stays at 86-89 and stays there and you get better mpg aswell

if you do put heater number 4 on it will bring the temperature gauge down though

They can take 5 -6 miles before the needle moves in this cold weather.

Mine sits at 84 on motorway does go up slightly there does seem to be a lot of stress on critical temperatures on here if it works fine in summer it's likely to be fine in winter it's just the cold snap effecting it and the vectra does take a age to warm up.

Try it with heater on cold and watch it get warmer faster and same driving up hills it should heat up quicker. -1 predicted locally tonight im working nights will take a while in the morning.
