Default Has anyone tried a solid mass flywheel on a cdti yet?

I'm away to fit a new flywheel to project runabout just shortly and i'm seriously considering a SMF to A: make things a bit cheaper and B: make it last a bit longer.

I've found a SMF kit on ebay for about 300 quid vs. a dmf kit for 450.

Does anyone have personal experience of a SMF on the cdti?

Problem was mate that some people read something somewhere else and then take it as gospel

I kinda want someone that's actually done it to pipe up and say what experiences they've actually had with an SMF

Welding it up Now that's just asking to break a crankshaft tbh. Not much point in going to the hassle of stripping the car down and then bodging it

Well the car has done 160k (120 of that with a knackered flywheel) so how much more damage could a solid flywheel do

This is where doing the work yourself pays dividends and if it goes wrong you just fix it yourself

Don't be so hard on yourself.....you've fitted vacuum pipes too

Time to give the old girl a new lease of life though eh.

Thing i've just noticed is that the SMF and DMF kits are within 25 quid of each other now so i'm not so sure if it's worth it

That's the thing though mate, is there that much of a difference between the 2?

I've driven a few torquey motors over the past few years that have no DMF and they are just as nice to drive as anything else.

The DMF is has one big spring and none on the friction plate and the smf has no springs and smaller ones on the friction plate so what's the real difference
