Cruise Control problem

The other night, I was sat going down the motorway, at 75-80 with Cruise Control on, then all of a sudden CC cuts out, and the spanner shows up on my display for 2 seconds or so, I then drive without cc for a couple of minutes and its fine, put cc back on and it does the same again!

Any ideas what it could be?

Seems like I'm having issue after issue with this car

You don't say what your car is...
I had similar on my 3.0CDTi Signum Eite (2008) quite a while back and the dealer traced it to a faulty switch whch was replaced under warrantee

I have a 2005 2.0 DTI

The alarming thing is the spanner showing up on the display

Yes - the switch in my case was not (as far as I am aware) the cruise control switch but one of the others that is interlinked with the system...

Turns out its a boost pipe, on front right handside, has a small split in, I guess at a certain speed is boosting and then ecu is picking up irregular readings and shutting off cruise control and throwing up engine management light
