    Default starting problem

ok. so the problem is that sometimes when i turn the car over, it takes a good 10 seconds to fire up, other times straight away. i did have a problem last week where the power steering failed. i took it to a guy who after looking at the voltages a bit, said the battery wasnt charging properly, possibly faulty alternator ?? he cleared the fault codes and been ok since. but it is annoying me when it takes ages to start. anybody ?? tia

I'd check the battery and voltages with it running on off... if its charging ok, should be something like 14.4 volts. How old is the battery? Mileage on the alternator? Do your glow plugs cycle at start-up?

I went through all these and found it to be the Starter Motor on mine (NUMEROUS threads on here). The 120 CDTI is renown for poor staring issues with a few miles under the belt.

i remember when the guy was checking the voltage, iirc, they all was around 14 as u say, dont know how old the battery is but it looks brand new, also, think the alternator has been on the car since new, its on 06 plate, and 117000 miles. and the glow plug symbol comes on then goes off if this is what you mean by the glow plug cycle.

If you intend on keeping the car for a while, I'd fit a new battery and starter motor at the very least, probably the cheapest and easiest to do yourself options to start with.

Then the Glow Plugs and the Alternator which are a bit more difficult and expensive.

I did my starter motor this weekend, bought a reconditioned unit and it took maybe an hour to put together...

Has it always been a bad starter? Or is it getting worse with the colder weather?

If the starting is getting worse, then to me it would be the glow plugs. Try cycling them by turning ignition on, wait for glow plug light to go out, switrch ignition off and on again and repeat for 2-3 times, then try to start. If it starts better, then I would change the glowplugs.

I have a similar problem. (although mine is a 1.8 petrol / 38000 miles on the clock).

It doesn't do may mile these days, problem is as follows:

Starting up, it used to fire up on just the 1st turn without hesitation.
However, lately it's being really sluggish in starting.

Almost as if the battery is drained. The dashboard goes dark, and it sounds like a rapid clicking noise coming from it.

I'll leave it a couple of minutes, try again. Sometimes i get the above again, sometimes it'll fire up after approx 5-6 seconds - and sound sluggish for a few seconds.

I thought initially it might be the battery, (there is a small green indicator on the battery - are these trustworthy?) but am now worried that it could be the alternator.

Do the likes of your blower fans stop for a bit when turning wheel, when that happened to me i had an hours driving left in the battery and then it died. Power steering motor is electric and the ecu prioritises the essential needs when power drops so non important units get cut 1st. Hence the blowers going. The alternator isn't giving enough power out and the car takes reserve from battery. Problem is if not enough charge from the alternator the battery isn't charging so no reserve power in the end.

Need the alternator checked as a priority as prime culprit. Can get full refurb for bout £80 plus refit labour.
my alternator was kicking out 11volts so it was a slow death till my AA man came and solved it.

remember the problem will be worse when using more electrics ie lights, fans etc when bad weather

Had mine for 5 weeks now. It doesn't turn over quite as quick as my 150cdti that I had previously (but hardly noticable), but always fires up first time. On one occasion, it turned over for a good 10 seconds before it fired (was first thing in morning). Fine otherwise. Glow plug light shows for about 5 seconds when cold.
When I get the chance, I'm going to jump-start it from another car. This will rule out the battery...
