Default Tyre Size change - Yep, yet another thread about this!

    Hey all,

Loads of topics on this which I couldn’t get a straight answer from…

I am running 18” Astra Pentas on my Vectra with 225/40/18 Tyres. All of which are shot and need replacing. This was an upgrade from 215/50/16 steel wheels I had on previously.

I was reviewing the handbook and posts and see the correct size of wheel for the Vectra in 18’s are 235/40/18’s. After a bit of searching I have decided I would like to get a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2’s. A bit more expencive that 225/40/18’s but they get great reviews so I though I would take the punt.

I can get these in the 235/40/18 size which will mean I have more rubber in my arches than I have at present which was fine to start with until I remembered I have Eibachs on the car dropping the ride height 30mm from the standard LS set up…

So my questions on this are…

Will these tyres fit without rubbing or problems on full lock?

Is anyone running these tyres are present and if so how are they… Are they worth the extra bucks?

oh... weeeee update... I can also get these tyres in 225/40/18 (same as what I have...)

Is that a better option instead of the bigger tyre?

they are fantastic tyres. Best i have had on mine so far..

I had them in 235/40/18 but I also have wheel spacers on all four corners so have no rubbing issues. Some say this width rubs and so some it doesn't.

235/40/18 is closer the factory recommended rolling diameter than the 225/40/18

What is the width of Astra pentas? I was going to fit 235, but decided it was probably a little wide for my 7.5J alloys. The "correct" size for 7.5J 18" Vectra wheels is 225 45 18. The 235 40 18 is for the VXR's which are 8J. I however am running 225 40 18 as A) they are cheaper and b) they are actually closer to the 215 50 17's I had standard (before the do gooders tell me my insurance is void they are aware).

To answer your question though all three of the above sizes will fit with out issue on 30mm drop Vecs.

    ahhhhh...

The astra Penta is a 7.5J wheel in width (is that 7.5"?) and the standard tyre size is 225.40.18 on this wheel for the Astra.

So might play is safe and put the same tread back on...

That said would 225.45.18 reduce tyre noise ont he Vectra at the cost of higher side walls and would 235.40.18's not also reduce tyre noise with marginaly large side walls? Oh and if the 235.40.18's were fitten then you the efectivly bulge out from the rim to the top of the tyre also resulting in more tyre travel from side to side (as I would put it) in sharp conering?

As john said its personal choice. I wasnt saying not to fit 235 or that 235 were dangerous, just that I took the decision that 235's were IMO at the limit of what was suitable for a 7.5J wheel so chose 225.

    Cool....

Thinking with my wallet the 225 option is very tempting as I know they fit etc...

I have suffered terribly with the current tread being hopless int he wet which was part of the reason for looking at the better brand and bigger tyres...

Will going for this Goodyear model (which people on here and independant reviews say are great tyres in dry and wet) in the smaller size of 225.40.18 make any difference to the cars handeling at all or is a tyre of this model as grippy as any others of a different size but still int his model?
