Some things not aligned properly, make sure the gear linkages are all ok

Sounds like gear cable not correctly adjusted. The car is automaticly in 1st gear when disconnected cables. And always need to be adjusted if new engine or new cable fitted.

    Has the clutch been bled?

If it's got the tiniest amount of air in the line, reverse will be the gear which is noticeably difficult to select.

Its unlikely to be a gearbox issue, any problems entering reverse is because there is no synchro-mesh for reverse gear and the input shaft must be stationary.... if not you get the crunch. So it's a clutch issue, either not de-clutching properly as there is air in the system? (Pedal feel ok? Suspect faulty CSC drawn a gulp air due to being worn) or draging because the friction plate is warped? (Hold the car on hills with the clutch? Clutch judder when pulling away from rest?).

I had the same problem with my 1.8 vectra after replacing the gearbox and engine, you need to adjust your gear linkage and it will cure the problem,
to do this you will need to lock the gear stick into adjust setting and also lock the the linkage at the gearbox into neutral using a 5mm drill bit,
the Haynes manual tells you how to do it,
    its easy.
