    Default Help for a Friend

I've just been speaking to my friend who owns a veccy 1.8 ls 81k on the clock, usual nonsence. He's not really a car kind of guy and has given me a fairly vague outline on some of his problems. His car has just had the cambelt and water pump done (part of the service at 80k?) and now it needs 'some work doing on the exhaust' (welding) and 'some corroded brake lines changing'. He's disheartened and worried that the car is going to start costing him mega bucks due to its age. My suggestion to him was that now that he's had 'the big one' done (belt and pump) all the rest of the bits should be small and not as costly.

So, his questions to you guys are,

1, should he get rid and buy something else?
2, how much (roughly) do you think he's looking at to get the brake pipe and exhaust work done?

I understand that the fault description is pretty vague but even a rough guestimate would be nice. I'm going to try and get some more info from him later on so watch this space. Cheers

My last Vec had an advisory at the last MOT I had done on it for all of the brake lines being slightly corroded. I asked about a price to change all the lines, and was quoted £200. Welding required on the exhaust is a bit vague, but say perhaps about £50 for that? Any more, and he'd be as well getting a new exhaust in my opinion.

Well IMO unless he buys a "new" car then he could just be buying the same or worse problems that someone else is trying to sell on. Better the Devil you Know in most cases!

Better the devil you know defiantly not worth getting rid over some welding an brake lines.

id say 2-3 hours a garage would charge to change all brake lines. If its just a particular section it may not be too expensive

and welding for exhaust should be cheap enough

Just had 2 rear pipes and a welded back box for £30, I'd just get it fixed... Well actually it's a 1.8 so I'd sell and get a bigger engine
