Thermostat fault ? Advice needed please. Thank you

Driving home tonight on the M25 and noticed my temp reading around 74. Turned the heaters on full pelt and after a few mins it dropped to 70 (flatlined basicly)

Got onto street roads and it started to rise to 80 ish.

Sat parked with the engine running and after a few mins its back to 91.

The heat coming out of the vents is only just warm too.

The vec drove fine whilst all this was happening.

My motor is a petrol 1.8 vvt sri 2006 with 91.5k on the clock.

What i need to know is it still ok to drive until the weekend, is this a sign of a thermostat starting to go belly up, how much roughly to correct and does anyone close(ish) want to fit it for me. Monies would exchange of course.

Sound like what miy 1.9 CDTI was doing. A new thermostat corrected it.

So looks like a new thermostat then.

Lets be blatant here. Who wants to fix it for me :-)

Oh and on the subject of is it ok to drive i do commute 100 miles a day. I don't want to do any damage as i do a lot of miles. I should have mentioed that before sorry.

A 100 mile drive will be ok. May use a little more fuel that it should, due to cooler running temperature

i changed my thermostat at 53000 miles tony 1977 is spot on

what you could do is turn the heater off and drive off in the morning and see if the gauge stays between 85-90 and stays there if it drops to 70 or flat lines its faulty
(make sure you turn the heater off )

i did notice my fuel mpg was bad when i had a faulty thermostat

best to buy an original gm one aswell

Can someone sort this for me this weekend by any chance? I know its a bit of an ask but I would rather pay one of you lads to do it than stick in a garage

Can't help sorry but I lived with a kanckered stat for a couple of years. When it was really cold last year, I would drive in bursts of 4th gear to keep the revs up a bit which resulted in hotter air from the vents.

Im going to attempt this myself. If it goes bad then it will be a tow to the garage.

So looking at parts now. Can i ask is it the housing i need. Are there any other parts i need. Got a bit confused as to what i will need.
