Default Do you hate your job? What do you do and why is it so bad?

Thought I'd start this thread for all of us who can't stand our jobs and want out, but aren't sure how...

I work as cabin crew for a UK airline and have done for the past 8 years. I am utterly utterly sick of the sleep problems, random shifts and having zero control of my life (I get pretty much no choice of time off etc, I miss the majority of family occasions etc). I work with different people every single day (sometimes a good thing, but sometimes it would be nice to turn up to a flight and have previously met at least one of the 17 people I'm working with!)

I've recently retrained as a domestic electrician, with plans to start a business, but I'm not sure how! Electrics are easy, registering a business and taking the plunge, now that's hard! Who else has gone self employed? Any tips?

Anyway, that's me... Who else hates their job and wants their life back?

I get bored of my career, its just so tedious doing the same stuff day in and day out, I've been a vehicle technician since I left school (1998) and I've tried moving to different work places, I've worked for Citroen for 6+ years, jeep/Chrysler for a couple, Mercedes for a short period and land rover for a few years, at the moment I work for a small (only 3 of us) independent volvo specialist been here 4 years and its not the best job in the world and the money's not fantastic but its only Monday to Friday, it's on my doorstep and the work is a lot more varied, but don't get me wrong I still have those days where I hate the place

Does it really make much difference which brand you work on though? Surely replacing a clutch is heavy and dirty work, whether it's for a Fiat or a Porsche? Or changing a hub, or springs, etc. My point is, does your mate really have it that much better? A new Porsche is worth, what, 8 times what a Fiat is worth, but that doesn't mean your mate earns 8 times as much. He doesn't get a Porsche to drive as a company car, either. I reckon he's in the same boat as you, for better or for worse.

Maybe its just the company, but he does seem to get much more enjoyment out of his job

I went self employed in 2003 following redundancy. Was very hard at first going from £37k a year and company car to £7k in the first year! VERY hard initially but you will find that your work ethic changes and you become more industrious and it's far more rewarding, I wouldn't go back now.

    Hi DNS.

Good for you making the change.

I really do not enjoy my job. Flying a desk all day long doing IT sales for coprotate back office systems etc... But I do have good shifts and get good money for what I do... It puts me in a difficult place as I have a job whcih I can do and get paid well for which lets me see my family etc but at the same time I really do not enjoy what I do.

I seriously, like you, looked at training to become a spark. I found out a good course to do which would get me fully trainied etc. The setting upthe own business is failry easy as a soletrader... it's just getting work. Flyering houses etc is one way etc...

The problem I had with doing it was that as I live in Scotland, even after doing the full training to uni standards I still need to do two years on the job training (efectivly as an aprentice) which at 35 has provem impossible to organise or get anyone to commit to.
