I thought all oil burners smoked on start up!
Do you use your car for short journeys a lot? When was the last time it had a good blast at speed?
How many miles on the clock?

This is fairly normal, to see large plumes of black smoke, either starting up, or after long periods of idling or stable revs and then applying power
However there should be NO smoke when idling
The Y30DT is well known for smoke every few start ups, but the majority there is no smoke at all
This is due to the unburnt fuel on startup
Usually do 30 miles a day but most of that is either 30 or motorway.
I may take it for a good blast over the weekend, just under 85k on clock
When would the judder be? doesnt smoke too much under load. i was thinking injectors aswell.
Thanks for the help guys.
I have a Y30 too.
This morning noticed the same problem as mattsbmw.
The smoke was like grey with blue, smelled pretty bad. Smoke came out only on idle, when i was accelerating, there were no smoke at all...
I think i had to do some motorway run this weekend, otherwise the car gets only 15 mile ride every day for a month so far.
The Y30DT is a smokey (sooty) engine, when you boot it and look in the mirror all you see is smoke LOL. Try sticking some diesel injection cleaner in the tank next time you fill up and go a decent blast and see if that helps.
Well, it sometimes smoke, when you floor it for the first time on a ride, but later when accelerating hard it doesn't smoke so much.
Some say, that diesel injector cleaner will not do any well to fuel pump. I will give it a good run on motorway later this evening, then i will see what is changed. As this is the first time i saw such a grey/blue smoke on idle, i was kind of scared. Injector change woudl not be so bad, but one of my mechanic friends told, that it also could be EGR valve, that would not be nice.
But anyway thanks for advise ghostdog.
My Y30DT also blows plumes of grey smoke under load, but only the first time it's put under load after a period of gentle cruising. As mine is an auto, I believe it has a DPF - I didn't think cars with DPF's were supposed to smoke unless they were going through the regen cycle?
Y30DT engined cars are not equipped with a DPF
As said above the 3.0 cdti is a smokey engine anyway nothing to worrie about unless its a a blue/ white colour lol
