Default 2.2DTI - Trouble starting when parked up hill

Hey guys, I have found a couple of theads which touch on this, but no defintive answers.

Basically, when I park my Signum 2.2DTI facing up-hill and leave it for more than a few hrs, it REALLY struggles to start. takes a good 30secs of cranking to fire up.

What do I need to change or mod in order to stop this from happening? I've read stuff about fuel injector seals, but why would this make a difference if i'm parked facing up or down hill?

should there not be a fuel non-return valve somewhere?

    Hi Jammy
change the spill pipes first it's not expensive, you can get the pipe from any good motor factor or VX if you prefere, also change the plastic t piece connectors.if this doesn't cure your problem then you will have to fit new injector seals.there is not a non return valve in the fuel system, when parked uphill the fuel tank is below the filter level allowing air to enter the system and the fuel runs back to the tank,it then takes forever for the pump to pull fuel from the tank to the injectors.

What might help if I understand the above post correctly, is to let the lift pump run for a bit longer than usual, turn the key to the last position before start, wait til the whirring stops, then off and on again, might help....... worth a try

Thanks, will give that a try. Is it worth trying to find a non-return valve to put in-line? that way it will also stop any air getting sucked in aswell. has anyone ever done it?

I posted this some time ago in respect to a z19dt fault, read the post on here as this post seems to be revisiting the same issue with some of the same not so helpfull replies.

    Safety first:-
Some 9 to 12 months ago I changed the bleed off pipes with pipe from my local motor factors, friday when I arrived home from my commute from Cheltenham to Stockport (130miles) I noticed a strong smell of diesel, on lifting the bonnet the whole of the engine was covered in diesel, yes bleed off pipes (2) had split. I started the engine to see how bad it was on tickover, diesel spraying everywhere. I would suggest only using genuine GM components when changing bleed off pipes.

YES the genuine parts are expensive £30+ inc VAT but whats your life worth.

You do not state how many miles that car has done?
Is the problem ONLY after parking pointing up hill or do you allways leave it like that at night?

This is most likely the leakoff/spill off pipes but if still persistent after being changed then it can also be caused by worn injector seals.

The 2.2dti and the 2.0dti has only got the main fuel pump and has not got a seperate lift pump.

Injector seals are a bit of a PITA to change but are cheap to buy.

The problem exists as air is able to get into the fuel system and this allows the diesel in the lines to drain back to the tank thus leaving a void and the car unable to start. As a 3rd option you may need to look at your fuel filter and ensure that is also fitted correctly and everything nice and air tight.
