Default Vulcan - 2013 Final Season

There have been a number of threads started over the past few years with regards to the Vulcan Bomber.

It would seem that 2013 will be her last season before she is grounded forever:

For those with an interest, she has to be one of the most amazing aircraft to see flying. Saw her flying across Tewksbury only the other week and earlier on in the year at the Air Tattoo. The presence in the sky and the noise will be something lost forever when she lands for the final time.

What a shame. They have done fantastically well to get it flying for these last few years. I was 10 at the time of the Falklands and remember reading in awe about the flight to stanley and back. I have only seen it in the air once, but it was a sight to behold.

A real shame but totally understandable. It was inevitable that the next year or two would be the last, realistically. I understand the engineering challenges are almost insurmountable, regardless of the amount of money donated. What I wonder is wether this could this year have been the last flying season?. Now that people realise she won't fly after 2013 will there be the money donated to undertake the winter service schedule and get her in the air for the final 2013 season?

Everyone stops and looks in awe when she flys!! I have seen her twice since the renovation and many times back in RAF service at various airshows. A real showstopper!!!!

Yep, nothing will ever beat setting of a full carpark of alarms at RAF Finningly on full afterburners.

    A sound i've never forget.

Yes - one of the most amazing sounds was when the Vulcan used to sneak in across the fields to Farnborough air show and then turn vertically on full throttle above the crowd.
    An awesome noise and sight!

The Vulcan was used as a test-bed for a Roller engine with afterburner, but didn't operate with them as standard did it?

Nope, the Vulcan never had afterburners. The Olympus engines which it uses were further developed for other aircraft which then incorporated afterburners. Concorde being one of them.

I think one of the unique things about the Vulcan and its engines was its "Howl" Do a search on YouTube for Vulcan Howl. When the throttles are opened and the 4 engines start sucking in air it creates quite a eeary but spine tingling sound.

Not sure why I put afterburner, as already said the Olympus varients used in the Vulcan didn't have them (Concorde and the TSR-2 did). It was still on full chat, with 1000's of car alarms going off
