Default This is why you should check oil level

Customer came in knocking engine smoke everywhere.

10l of oil in engine :O

after further investigation an talking to customer turns out he topped up after seeing it got low on oil.

i has suspicion big ends had gone. Tool sump off to find no3 big end shells an crank completly shot an signs of lack of oil on other cylinders shells

Nice big bill for customer now.

remember people check an top up oil regularly

Thanks for the pics.. Now, i know my way around a spanner or two, but not to the extent of the engine details. I can see the big ends and the crank in the pics, but what in the pics is showing the result of lack of oil?

    Thanks

one lobe is shiny, the other is dull and rough due to lack of oil and its rubbed metal to metal.

So basically he topped it up after it started knocking?

I do check mine, but thankfully mine doesn't use any oil between changes.

Yeah as stated its ground the Harding down on the crank will take some pics of the shells later.

and basically the belief is its ran low on oil an thats allowed metal to metal contact to happen their fore causing wear to happen and then they've topped it up too much an so the crank is bathing in oil rather than splash lubricated an so the velocisty of each revolution of crank is slowed is time it hits the oil so then any play that had been created is now made worse.

All just my theory from what's been seen of course because no one ever owns up to what's actually happened

After initial questioning customer said yes topped up then next day retracted statement saying no it was bought like that.

But proof is in the pudding. Came in billowing smoke out an rattling/ knocking like hell so theirs no way it was sold like that.

No3 was completly shot wiggled round like a c*ck in bucket. The ends of the shells are all burred

i wouldn't want to be that customer today.
bill as a bare minimum is crank & shell bearings. Along with all the labour involved.
