Default Random Question... but what should a 120 CDTI sound like?

I ask, (First Derv) because I'm sure the cars jumped up a few DB's in the 4 months I've owned it... The car drives great, but once I hit around 2k revs, it just sounds like a tractor! It pulls like a train, but just sounds so rough! It also sounds rubbish when its started from cold... like it really doesnt want to play!

I have also noticed that when at idle there's a slight noise, like a hum, which disappears with the slightest blip of the throttle.

Are Dervs just rubbish when cold and is the 8V lump really this loud?

All dervs are noisier then a petrol, go and listen to someon elses see if they sound the same. Some people have added some 2 stroke oil to the diesel, it helps to lubricate the top end. There is a thread on hee about it.

Now, that's when the noise started ( I Think ) as soon as I got the car in May I changed the oil, it had been sitting for over a year before. Then, 2 weeks later I changed it again, but went from 5w30 to 0w40 as that's what the mobil1 website recommended... however, the car then became noticeably louder.... so again, around 2 weeks later I changed it again, back to GM 5W30, but it hasn't sounded right since. I've cleaned (and now replaced) the throttle body and cleaned (and now Fiat gasket blanked) the EGR... but everytime I changed the oil, within 100 miles the oil is black! (First Derv so not sure how normal that is) I was thinking of putting a thicker oil, like 10w40 or an engine flush treatment possibly? I also just put a BG244 treatment through, but no improvement, I still get a very good MPG. Can you change the oil Too often????

Millers diesel additive works for me; it quietens them down a bit and makes them feel much smoother. The slight improvement in fuel consumption when using it more or less pays for it too. The Vx diesels seem to get particular benefit from it - my last cdti 120 and my current 3.0cdti both liked a good smoke under load, but with Millers in the tank, no smoke at all. I've used it for years now in all manner of different cars and am totally sold on it.

Sorry - to clarify; it's Millers Fuel Additive, not Oil Additive. Quite agree with your comment re an oil flush!
