hmm, not an expert but regardless of temp and motorway etc my gauge when warm always sits at 85
a change to 80 indicates a possible problem but nothing that i would worry about changing the stat at this time
Normally when a thermostat has gone, the car will only warm up when its stationary and as soon as you move off, the temperature gauge falls quite quickly as the car is over cooling.
The thermostat may be sticking slightly, and can be changed for peace of mind.
I have no reading on mine from a stand still or moving so im going to change the thermostat and the temp sensor and hope for the best
Remember the gauge starts at 70c not zero!
Mine takes a few miles before it starts to go up and with the chilly weather it may take a little longer should you have the heating on as your pulling it away from the engine.
On a good run on the motorway when hot it should be around 84c give or take.
yes, i run a 1.9cdti and it takes around 5 miles or 10 mins depending on weather to get the needle to 85c
i changed my thermostat last year after it sat at 70 even after a good run on the motorway,
