Default Looking for a cheap second car, suitable for towing horse box?

    As the title says...

Looking for a second motor (3dr & derv) for the wife to get to work & back daily (3 mile each way) but it must be able to pull a horse box, 1 x 16.2hh heavy horse & 1 x 12.2 pony. has to be 4x4 & capable of getting weight on & off muddy fields. budget so far £2k cash not in a great rush but will need in time for next spring. So far my thoughts are:
    Frontera
    Shogun
    Freelander
    Rav4

Your thoughts are welcome, especially from anyone with real world experience.
I do too much mileage daily to buy myself an RR sport or Disco

Get a Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8 Turbo diesel SWB - cheap as chips and a good strong engine - don't suppose you want a 1.7Dti Corsa Sxi 02 50k - I can put you a towbar on it cheap lol

Before my Vec I had a swb Shogun (97 2.5 diesel) - it was absolutely brilliant. The only reason I got rid was because it wasn't really suited to driving around town when my circumstances changed. It pulled out offroader (on a car transporter) fine, and a friend of ours pulls her two horses without an issue. The superselect 4wd system works well, do you can set off in 4wd and change to 2wd on the move - nice for getting the horse box out of a field.

Wouldn't touch a Freelander with a barge pole - know various proper who've had them. They like head gaskets. the viscous coupling is very weak on the prop, can be expensive to change, resulting in people just binning it - thus it not being 4wd any longer.

Have you thought about an Isuzu trooper? My dads now on his 3rd, 4 of our friends have them. The 3.1 diesel is a good strong realisable unit and fairly economical. The majority of his driving is short runs and he gets 30mpg out of it. There not bad to drive either - would really recommend

Good suggestions - The Pajero is the same as the Shogun - its the Japanese import version (and usually cheaper than the Shogun) - 2.5 is a good motor but the 2.8 is better and has a timing chain as opposed to a belt - Agree with the Freelander comment - Troopers or even the Vauxhall version, the Monterey with the Isuzu engine is a nice motor

Thanks for the suggestions so far, although i have borrowed a few 4x4's & done plenty of towing, i have never owned one, i did think about the trooper 3.1 but thought it would be heavy on fuel lol...
So freelander scrubbed off & replaced with Trooper or Monteray.

Hi Steve, will do thanks... forgot you had the Lada, how's it comming along, have you done any off roading in it.
I'm thinking off having a bit of off rd fun with tuition or something as well as tow the hay burners about with it.
