Default Thoughts on a missed service 2.2 signum

You opinions please. Looked at a 2.2 signum last night on a 56 plate. The owner bought it in jan 11 at 22k, drove it till 39k, missing a service at 30k, by which point the can chain was noisy. He then had it serviced at 39k and new chain.

It sounded healthy but would this lead to other engine problems?

Also the drivers seat looked tired for 40K, is this normal for leather? Looking at the seat i'd have expected to see close to 100k on the clocks.

Other than that looked very nice. It's the lack of service which is putting me off and possible engine damage.

You have doubts about this specific car, so don't take any further interest

With respect to the issues you have raised

A missed service is not the end of the world
Warranty companies, once you make them aware of this, will request you apply a process called clawback
This will mean a few services in a shorter than normal period, and will then put the original schedule back in place
With respect to this vehicle, the services would have been due in 2008/2009, 2010/2011, and 2012/2013
It is therefore now due its third service, so has one service missing
Taking it to 39K miles is rather high, but so long as the pollen, air, and fuel filter were also replaced there is no major issue
The main issue would be the oil and oil filter, and this may have resulted in the engine damage, of which the noisey cam chain is one symptom
The entire issue would need to be investigated, as other components will have worn excessively (not just the cam chain)

It would be rather unusual for the drivers seat to have worn by 5 years old / 40K miles
This suggests lots of short journeys, almost every day, most likely from commercial use (including taxi)
Equally, it could also be an indication of clocking
When the seats show such wear compare other items that should wear out at roughly the same rate such as the clutch and brake pedal rubbers, and the protection mat (often hidden under carpet mats)
If the service book only has one stamp, as suggested above, then this would be one way to hide the history
However, the car should have at least two MoT, so you could check these to see if the mileage is consistent

With a good third party warranty subsequent engine damage will not be an issue over the period of cover, but don't expect the car to last as long as if it had a full and correct service history
It has probably lost about 50% of its engine life, so expect it to have further issues from 100K miles onwards
The other car components won't be an issue or concern as they are most non-maintenance and will fail as normal with wear and tear, but as above if it has indeed been clocked this will occur unusually early on the currently indicated mileage

As above, don't look any further into this car...

Shouldn't do. After all the official service interval is every year OR 20,000 miles - whichever comes sooner. In short, it hadn't done 20,000 miles since the last service, but had been more than a year.

My leather had done nearly 80,000 miles and still looks like new. End of the day it depends on how you look after it. Clean it regularly and feed it every now and again to keep it suptle and it'll last years.

Thanks for the comments, I'll be giving this one a miss. If nothing else then it opoints to the car not being looked after.

The outside of the driver's bolster is prone to wear and it's a common issue, partly due to the fact car companies are too cheap to use actual leather on anything but the seat faces and a lot depends on how the driver gets into the car and the seat position, etc.

Surely also the state of the leather would also be dependant on the weight of the driver, if the guys 24 stone he is not going to be jumping in and out of the car he is going to be pulling himself in or out and as such sliding across the seat surfaces .
No offence intended to anyone but this is a fact i had a freind who was on the large side and he broke two of my car seats just by getting in and out
