    Default X6 Stolen

Just had a rude awakening, my doorbell was rung at 3:30 am, outside was a member of Kent's finest. The officer asked if we had a car missing, when we looked over his shoulder, there was a gaping big space where the BMW X6 was supposed to be parked.

Didn't hear a thing, they must have used some sort of cloning device to get into the car and get the electrics on, this would have enabled them to disengage the parking brake and push the car off the drive. But we suspect the cloned key must have failed since the car was recovered less than a mile from the house. It's on its way to the pound for forensics tests.

Done a bit of googling and it looks like this a massive problem for high value keyless entry cars. BMW in particular are reluctant to admit they have a serious problem on their hands. I'll have a few choice words for them when I call the dealership this morning.

Met police coming out later this morning, will update.

If its the keyless version it takes about 2 minutes to clone a key via the OBD port.

Its been all over the news.

this flaw was kindly advertised on tv the other day, i think it was on Fake Britain. i imagine a lot of BMW drivers are very peed off about it but BMW can retrofit a fix.

Was reading about this the other day, problem is they have fitted the OBD socket in a blind spot for the interior alarm sensors right by the drivers window. People have figured out you can smash a small part of the window, reach your arm in carefully down the door card and plug in a key programmer without the alarm triggering. Two minutes later you have a valid key for the car and just drive it away.

Quite why the OBD port remains fully active or allows programming while the car is locked I don't know. Maybe this is standard in all OBD's but it's a ridiculous flaw if it is. Simply not allowing programming of a key while the car was locked would stop this happening.

All sorts of things being suggested on BMW forums and Pistonheads, from replacing the socket with a fake one wired up to zap the programmer plugged into it (fine until you forget to tell your dealer when you put it in for a service lol) to lockable covers (can't see that stopping people), disabling the port completely (not exactly convenient and I'd imagine voids your warranty).

The programmers are being sold for about $50 from the far east, so not even an expensive bit of kit for people who want to do this. I think if I owned a new BMW (and it's not just BMW's it's loads of keyless start cars), I'd be chaining it to the floor in a concrete bunker round about now

we were talking about this yesterday in work and also about the keyless entry and start up off cars the one were i says you only have to know the key is in there somewere well one of the lads told us this story that his freind has a car with this technology and one day she got into the car with her husband knowing the key was there somewere car started up took her husband to work dropped him off drove on to a petrol station turned the car off and then realised her husband had the key hence y it started earlier so had to call the AA out to recover the car 3rd time it has happened to them

my concern was that if someone was to put there keys close to the door say which i know of people who do and the car was parked outside the house close enough to recieve the signal someone could just get of with the car i think technology is getting way to ahead of it self bring back the old fashioned key i say
