Default Replacement Engines ?? What is the score ?

I was looking through some car adverts and one said engine recently changed .

The actual car is on 105 thousand miles , but the engine has 70 thousand miles on .

    So , i was wondering ,

Where does the new owner stand regarding a replaced engine ?

I would have thought that the owners log book would have to be altered , regarding the cars identification numbers .

Should an engine change be recorded ?

Can any one replace an engine and not tell anyone .

How many cars do you think , are out there , with donor engines and the owners do not know ?

Maybe a certificate should be issued for replacement engines , a bit like when you get L.P.G. fitted .

What are your thoughts and knowledge ?

    Thanks for any replies .

DVLA should always be notified of a change of engine, same to a change of colour.

Not many people bother updating the engine numbers.

I would think so , any engine swaps I have done for people I have given them the engine number to put on the V5 , up to them if they do it .

I asked the seller if the change of engine had been recorded with the D.V.L.A. and this is what he said ....

" im not sure but to be honest i dont know anyone who dose register them " ( his spelling mistake not mine / copy & pasted )

I doubt this excuse is a " get out of jail card " if pulled by the police or insurance company .

Since it is lawful to update the D.V.L.A. , then i guess that the potential new owner ( with the wrong / different engine in the car ) is where the buck stops

and the original seller , who changed the engine without updating D.VL.A. , gets away with it .

I can see Insurance companies using it to reject claims ,

but what happens to the car owner , when the police find a car with a non matching engine ?

doubt if it would ever be noticed in this day & age as half the time the engine numbers are in some hidden inaccessible place anyway , not like the good old days .

Why do you even care ? An engine is an engine, as said earlier the majority of engine numbers are in an unreadable place anyway.
if its bothering you that much don't buy the car.
I must have changed 30+ engines most while working for main dealers and I bet not once has the customer contacted the dvla regarding an engine change, it's only really recommended if your going from a small engine ie; 1.0 to say a 2.0 t as that is blatantly noticeable
