    Default cat d report

    Howdo all.

    I've seen this car:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221132821060

Sounds perfect apart from it's a cat D. I've had a look but can't find anywhere on the internet where I could get the report on it. Does anyone know of anything or will I have to stump up for a HPI check?

    Cheers.

Hpi will only confirm it was cat d write off.

as for actual report. I think only maybe the insurer who made the write off will have it

Looks lovely. The CAT D wouldn't bother me at all. As long as it drove right, looked right, felt right and underneath was as it should id bounce on it.

Cat D ? Just remember it's worth half, or less, sometimes MUCH LESS, than the book value of a car that's not in this category.
If you want to keep hold of a car and its real value, don't buy it unless you are prepared to run it into the ground.

No matter how much you minimise the Cat D description, it will put most buyers off and as such, leave you in many cases with an un-saleable car when it's time for you to get rid of it.

Cheers chaps. I plan to keep whatever car I get for a good 4 or 5 years so I don't expect to be able to get much back on it. I contacted the seller and he hasn't got any history for it so it's a no for me. Cheers for that text number tho, might come in handy if I see another.

I know what you mean about cat d but if it's just panel damage it's sometimes worth a punt. My ZS was written off due to panel damage and I know for a fact there was nothing structurally or mechnically at fault - it was a low speed scrape where I hit a plough attachment on a tractor and I was doing about 10 or 15mph at most. But all you need to write off a cheap car these days is a couple of panels that need replacing.

For that price even without history, as long as you had it checked prior to purchase for structural damage, you could have the belt done and enjoy a nice car. If you then decided it had to go you'd still most likely get most if not all your money back on it.

Remember, a history only tells you about what has happened.... even a car with the most complete history can fail due to something entirely unrecorded.

Given the spec and price, it's worth a thorough look over and is most likely a decent buy.

Aye. I would if it wasn't so &*^^* far away.

Sometimes tho I wish people had some gumption. When I got my bora the service book was fully stamped but I wanted to know exactly what had been done when, so I went to the dealers and got a printout breakdown of everything they'd done. I guess I could do this for this gsi I suppose if there was some clue as to the supplying dealer. I wonder if it could be done by numberplate through Vx themselves? I might ring my local vx dealer and ask.

...that's if any/all servicing/work had been done by Vx stealerships... as soon as you factor in work done by the owner, his mate or local garages, that history falls flat.

To be fair, as long as the car's straight (damn hard to align all panels if the substructure is damaged) and it's cheap enough, then things such as belts and filters can be done immediately. Anything that fails after that will most likely be normal wear and tear items which would go even if you had a record of every bulb that ever blew and every single fuelling it's had.

And when I was seeing a Yorks lass a few years back, Shrewsbury to Leeds was only 2 hours drive.... not so far for the right car.
