Default Keeping a DPF in good shape?

I've read on here that a good blast every month will keep the DPF clear - but can anyone be a little clearer on what I need to do (miles/speed/revs) in my CDTI 150 Auto. I usually commute 2 or 3 days a week in the car (the rest on motorbike) and each way its about 7 miles of motorway and 6 miles of A road and 40mph Dual carriageway. Would this be enough to keep me out of trouble or should I ensure a regular longer run - and if so should I knock the Auto box back to 4th for higher revs?

Also when the DPF is 'cleaning itself' is there a light on the dash to show this?

    Any enlightenment greatfully received.

Get it removed and mapped out. Problem sorted and more power at the same time...
