More people spending money in shops, and more people being paid to work in shops = better for the economy. Would be good if shops could be persuaded to hire Sunday staff though, instead of forcing existing employees to work against their wishes.

Is this the reason why whenever I see an English Tesco thats says 24hours it's always shut after 4 on a Sunday?

Up here a 24 tesco is just that, 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Even our local Asda is open till 10 tonight

Odd that some shops can trade on Sundays and stay open as long as they like, but others cannot.

Like certain shops in London can be open on Christmas day because of the owners religion or race.

A Tesco down the road from me is allowed to stay open till 11pm Sundays. Yet another one a few miles away has to cease trading by 4:30pm. The former is a Tesco Express, the latter a Tesco Extra. All down to how big the shop is. Just plain daft.

I thoroughly enjoyed the longer hours during the Olympics. No pressure to get to the tills at 4pm. Meant I could do my shopping in a Tesco Extra, then go pack the car. Then go back in for a beverage and a browse around the entertainment and electrical section (Swindon branch)

It would be more helpful if the shops were open later on a Sunday, as I and many others tend to work 6 days a week Sunday is the only day I get to go shopping

Race/religion has nothing to do with it. As long as Christmas day isn't on a Sunday then any shop can open on that day, regardless of race or religion. It just comes down to whether the owner/manager/staff would rather be at home stuffing their faces with turkey or earning money.
