    Default 2.0T rattle at idle

My 2008 2.0t seems to have a slight rattle coming from the passenger side under bonnet area, but only at idle. It also seems to get worse if I dip the clutch slighty and hold it there - fully down seems to be no noise, fully up a slight noise.

Its a sort of tappa-tappa light knocking noise. From what I've read on here its all the symptoms of a failing dual mass flywheel - on a petrol car so I'm on of the few people to have this, lucky old me!

Can't believe it, thats one of the reasons I went for a petrol instead of diesel to avoid dpf, dmf, egr problems and now this happens! Time to ditch and run I think as if I'm putting £700 towards something it will be a new car.....not happy!

Before you jump to any costly conclusions, check the heat shielding etc... Had to re-attach most of mine on a 55 plate, so you may be getting some loosen.

That was my first (hopeful!) thought, but it gets a bit worse when you dip the clutch slightly. I've had an exhaust shield loosen on a previous car and thats more of a metallic 'clinking' sound, this is more like a tappety sound, not really loud though.

Fair do mate, just have seen lots of people spend money on parts when it was a silly little fix.

I suppose it could be dmf or possible clutch bearings?

If it's the bearings, then typically the sound would go away when the clutch is pressed, a failing DMF does the opposite. Ultimately it doesn't make that much difference whether it's the bearing or the DMF, the gearbox still needs to be separated from the engine, and if you do that then you should take the opportunity to replace the DMF anyway. DMF failure on the 2.0T is rare but not unheard of, Duncan had to replace his DMF IIRC. Get the noise checked by a clutch specialist - they may give you the good news that it's neither the clutch bearing or the DMF and is therefore something more minor.

DMF failure seems pretty rare on this car from what I've seen on here, but still possible I guess.

Anything that involves gearbox off, even if its just to replace the clutch bearing will be the end of the car for me, can't afford to shell £100's on this one.

Flipping heck, just priced the parts on eurocarparts, 600 quid for a flywheel and clutch and I guess fitting would be a couple of hundred more. Definitely not worth it! I'm never buying a car with a dmf again, whether it's petrol or diesel!

I quite fancy a Zafira now, anyone had a later 1.8? I borrowed an older 1.8 and it was a nice drive but I would hope to get around 40 mpg to help with the costs.

Ok you say you're never buying a car with a dmf again and then say you fancy a Zafira. You do realise they have DMF's too right?
