Default Spare rear light on estate

On my estate, if you look at the two inner lights (red) that are mounted on the tailgate only the drivers side light works and its the rear fog.

On the passenger side there is a bulb in there but it has never worked. Yes I have checked the bulb

Is mine faulty or is just a spare?

They were never wired up. After a certain year the law only requires the offside foglight so vx did not fit the loom

Well its possible that it worked before I had the REC replaced last year. The new REC might not support it.
I just noticed that one wasn't doing anything when I went to change a bulb at the weekend.

Seems odd that there would be a bulb in there if it wasn't meant to work.

No, it won't have ever worked, if you look at the wiring loom, the wire will be missing for it. As John Bishop already said, there's no legal requirement for it to be wired up so Vauxhall saved a few quid and didn't. You can just run one wire from the drivers side one to the passenger side one and both will then work (I've done this on mine), but all Vectras are the same in this respect.

Also it was a cost cutting measure from vx. Bulb was inserted so you have a spare if I remember correct

How can missing out 1 wire be cost cutting?

The light cluster still has the connectors, the bulb is still there. How much does one piece of wire cost?

It's not cost cutting at all, it's safety related. Rather than having two fog lights on, which can mask the function of the brake lights, only one fog light is used. That and only half annoying people behind you when you forget to switch them off when conditions improve or when people use them as rain lights instead of their intended purpose for fog.

Big Dave -> why do you think the rear fogligth have to be 10 cm from the break light and you have a third break light. = the rule actually state you have to have 2, but allowed to have 1..
