rolleyes It's nearly time for....... the Winter Tyres debate!!

I now have a total of 9 alloy wheels for my car.
    They are 16" with 205 or 215 / 55 / 16 tyres

4 are going to have Winter tyres on them.

I have had, and liked, Continental TS830's. But i left them fitted on my old Vectra.

Anyone tried MAXSPORT ALASKA 3 from Ears Motorsports in Maccelesfield? These are a re-thread winter tyre.

Anyone found any offers on Winter tyres???

Thanks for the advice Chuff, very useful. 4 of my wheels are indeed keeping the garage pinned to the ground.
But why is a Southerner drinking Yorkshire Beer??
I hope your not adding lemonade to it.............

nope, not gonna buy them, not for the warm weather we have down here anyway.. I know a few that bought some and then wished they hadn't not just because they did not get to use them properly but because their insurance went up as it's considered a modification (by some comps)

It would be annoying to fit them and then have no snow, but they work well under about 7 Degree's C in any conditions.
Yes, I have heard that some insurance companies might consider Winter tyres a 'modification'.
I also sure that i have seen that debunked, it might even have been on here last year.
The Vectra Owners Manual does mention Winter tyres but as long as you stick to the published tyre sizes for your car/wheel size then it should not be considered a 'modification', no more than any other choice of tyre is.

not exactly debunked but heavily disgreed with. Yet try arguing your case with an insurance company that you already have a paid up policy with. Its daft as we know, like fitting bigger brakes that come factory fitted on other models, they will stop you better and therefore are a safety enhancement but its always seen as a mod. Having different wheels (alloys or steelies) instead of the factory fit will also be considered a mod..

If our winters were consistently poor then i agree it should be law but as stated in that article storing them is a pain. I remember when living with an ex in Germany, she would keep her spare wheels in a cupboard upstairs in her apartment, to her it was not out of the norm though, but she wished she could keep all her shoes in there instead. I also used winter/snow tyres with the studs when driving my mates vectra over in sweden (he lives there) and they were fantastic despite the expense of an extra set he would not be without them. Although i have a spare set of alloys winter tyres are not for me, I have no issues with the tyres i currently purchase in winter if it snowed more than a few inches I would be screwed anyway as my car is lowered and my traction control is not switchable which crap in such conditions.

Thanks for the link Nige, I think the insurance companies just like to charge more if you contact them for any reason.
