Default what 80's car would you buy

was going to sell the gsi and buy a 330 bmw but the wife has said no and told me to buy a cheap car for my self to do call outs in instead.
i just done a insurance qoute on a basic punto and came out over £800+ for something that i would hate.

so done a classic car insurance on a 1983 xr3i cab and it came out a lot cheaper first qoute £400 so odds on could get it a little cheaper.

so what 80's convertable would you buy for under a grand
at the moment its a xr3i cab or
a golf gti cab never drove a vw so dont know what their like but love the looks.

    a few rules
    1 injection no carbs
    2, convertable
3, have a back seat for my daughter to go school
4, 2.0 litre is the highest

    golf
    TOYOTA CELICA
possable bmw 3 seires e30 325 (but defeats the object of better mpg than the gsi)
    PEUGEOT 205 (but its french)
possable early 90's astra depends on how much insurance would be would it be classed as a classic

just been looking at one of them but it will be same story insurance will kill me the only way around it would to see if chris knott would do some sort of multi car insurance under the wifes insurance.
the vectra is insured with them with the 4 years no claims.
what problem i have is been a named driver on the wifes insurance so i have no noclaims so its like starting from scratch.
want insurance to be around 400-600 and it seems classic car insurance is the only way
i thought a punto had to be one of the cheepist to insure but £800+ shocked me for a 1.2 where i can get 1.6 or 1.8 on classic car and have a bit of fun at the same time

My 80's car of choice would have to be a Ford Capri, I don't have one just now (an MGF is the current toy) but have owned 7 over the years.

I have to ask, if it's costing £800 to insure a Punto how much do you pay for a 3.2 GSi???

If you are going to "jobs" ie customers, should you not have business insurance rather than just commuting?

Also thing to remember is classic insurance can be limited mileage

What about a targa top? is this a second car? So zero ncb? What do you do for a living? Is a classic going to be reliable enough for a work vehicle?

My money would be on a Saab
