Default Servicing - DIY or garage?

How many of you service your own vehicles? At what age (car) do you stop paying out and do it yourself?

I remember reading that a FSH will increase your vehicles value, but not as much as you think - on some vehicles a FSH will only add around £500 to it's value.

That's about the same as you would pay for three services.

    Any thoughts?

Funny that a FSH adds value when in real terms, and its well documented on here, that what happens during a main dealer service fails well short of expectations and what you pay for. Missed filters and too much oil added all to common occurrences. Personally I will always do my own servicing as its all simple to do and i'll know its actually done. And taking into consideration the cost of oil, oil filter, air, pollen and plugs i'll still had change from £60.

If a car is worth £1800, is it really going to be worth £500 more if serviced by a garage, compared to properly serviced by the owner with all receipts to prove it? I doubt it. For a 7 or 8 year old car, the buyer wants to see no rust, a few toys and long MOT and Tax.

pulled a bloke over last week in a vectra C , I was following him & noticed his car spewing petrol all over the road so flashed him to stop .
he said the car had just been serviced that week , don't know who had serviced it as the fuel filter had been there years & was corroded into a hole .
rather do all my own then I know whats been done .

My last three cars, 2 Cavaliers and the Vectra, all petrol, have covered 500,000 miles between them ( 236K, 168K, 98K and counting ). No major mechanical issues ( so far ) and in that time only saw a Vauxhall dealer once for a cambelt change on the 2.0 16V Cav.

I was that shocked by the low standard of service that I have never been back ( parts loose, damaged and old parts left under the bonnet )

Dealer work Is often below standard due to time driven bonus.

Do you think they take wheels off during a service in a dealer?
2 guys I work with came ffrom access dealership an some of their stories are shocking tbh. But it's not just vx all dealerships are same

Granted some good uns out their but for their labour price alone it rules out getting most cars done their.

I would suggest perhaps a small independent garage once a year for for oil change so they can have car up in the air an check all bushes etc that play an wear might be missed by home mechanic on a set of axle stands
