Default Mixed tyre sizes on different axles ?

Ok could someone clear this question up for me, can i have 215/50/17's on one axle and 225/45/17's on the other axle?
As in another thread i'm looking to change front tyres soon and want to get away from the nct5's on my car. Will have to keep rears for now as lots tread left. Tyre fitter told me it would probably void insurance if i did mix. What are the legals involved in this? Anyone else run their car like this?

Yes, you can mix different sizes on different axles, just not on the same axle (although some people mistakenly believe you can't have different brands on the same axle). Many performance cars have much bigger tyres on the back than at the front, the Vauxhall VX220 (Lotus Elise clone) is a great example of having hugely different sized tyres front and rear. Conversely, the Audi RS3 has narrower tyres on the back because the size Audi wanted to fit were rubbing on the springs, so they made the rears narrower but left the fronts as wide as they had originally wanted.

"Tyre fitter", "insurance" - two completely different industries, which answers your question.

The 2 sizes are mentioned in the handbook.

I ran the 225/45/17s on the front and 215/50/17s on the rear for approx 2 years. No questions asked at MOT or service time.
