Question VOSA MOT mileage records accurate?

Discovered by doing a VOSA MOT check that my car was at 148,000 miles in 2010 and miraculously only at 73,000 when I bought it! Took it back to the dealer he claims he bought it from a main dealer he knows in good faith, so didn't check the mileage. He's gonna get back to me with an explanation from the guys who sold it to him or a refund. Just wondering if you guys know if VOSA can get the mileage wrong?

They got the VIN No wrong on my mate's van. It was something like, they read a G instead of a 6 or something like that. He had to take it to Leeds for an inspection. Anything's possible.

Phone call to trading standards is in order, mileage is taken at the time of mot, can be checked with opcom to read ecu mileage I think

I had a very similar situation when I bought my first Vectra, it had been clocked 30K Trading Standards did me well and got me a full refund as goods were not as described etc etc.

It would be grossly unfair if they washed their hands of the situation under 2we bought it in good faith" argument

Yea I've been onto trading standards, got it all logged incase I need to go further, now just waiting for his come back tommorow.

If I wasn';t such a car buying novice I would have done the checks before buying it.

Had a couple of car dealers look at it and tell me it looks like its got classic signs of heavy duty use. The manifold is caked up with soot / swirl flaps are off, and the interior: the gear knob is heavily worn, and there are classic signs of a taxi driver meter installation. So I strongly suspect the VOSA mileage is correct and the cars been fiddled.

Have you checked the online MOT records?

Also, get someone to plug an opcom into it and it'll tell you the reading in the ECU in kilometres.

Disconnect the battery for the night if still have the car, clocks will be right in the morning... Unless they have changed it in the ecu which is unlikely.
