    Default Z19DTH not starting

A mate of mine has a 150 bhp 16v vectra and Saturday he broke down. Symptoms were and increase in temp to 100 deg. and a rattle from the engine with a burning/electrical smell from the back of the engine bay just after it died. I said it sounds like water pump failure. Having checked the timing belt yesterday it is intact and doesn't appear damaged but the car won't start and it keeps throwing a P0340-28 camshaft sensor range/performance code on my reader. As the water pump runs on the non-toothed side of the belt is it possible for it to cause any timing/jumped tooth issues when they cease? or does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue may be?

    Update:
Picked it up from the garage last night and the belt guide had gone. So new guide, belt and water pump etc.. but the car has no low down power, kicks out more black smoke than any car I've ever seen and is a ***** to start. Mechanic is saying it has taken a valve and wants £900 to sort it. The belt didn't break but jump when the guide collapsed so could have taken a valve as the engine ran on for a while but would it also result in black some belching from the exhaust? It is also giving a P2279-5b fault code if that help

As I believe it, these engines can take valves out but more likely that they break the rockers instead. I would suggest somone look in the engine top end to see if any visible damage

Personally I would make sure its been put back together correctly.

Sounds like the mechanic may have left a pipe off some where.

Check all induction and exhaust including EGR for air leaks.
