Default Damaged lacquer. One for the paint experts!

I have been removing some swirl marks that could only be seen in certain light conditions. Unfortunately, i rubbed a bit too hard on a couple of areas & seems like i have damaged the clear coat around the filler flap & tailgate rear edge.

Any ideas of a cheap fix, or to make it look less rubbish without getting the panels resprayed?

    Many thanks.

That looks really odd. Has the car been repainted or relacquered as far as you know? Also what were you using to remove the swirl marks?

I'd wager that a coat of decent wax might soften the blow?

Youve gone through the laquer the only to get rid is to have panels painted again. If you try to polish to will only go down to the basecoat and look even worse.

Yep as above, that is a little surprising though, would be interested to hear what you were using.

This has happened by hand, so polishing with a DA cant always be assumed as safe. Paint thickness has to be taken in to consideration.

Do you know if your car has been machine polished before?

You could possibly fix that with a cheap rattle can of lacquer... Bob it on lightly and flat it back once dry as long as there's enough colour coat left...

Think repainting will be the only way to put it right tbh, you must of been rubbing hard with a very abrasive compound?

Looks like its been machine polished (Not with a DA) or its had a smart repair done in the past.

Thanks for the replies. I first tried meguairs scratch X to try to reduce the swirl marks....i thought it had done the job untill the sun was in a certain position & it looked just as bad. The stuff that did the damage was mer scratch paste, my fault for rubbing too hard on the tailgate edge.

I bought some meguiars ultimate compound & done the whole car with it....seems good stuff & finished off with some autoglym SRP. The car looks really good now apart from the damage to the lacquer that i inflicted on it

Dont know if it has been machine polished in the past & i dont see any obvious evidence of any paint repairs\resprays ever been done. I took it to a local repair place today & he confirmed that the panels will need respraying to correct the damage.
Anyway, i have learned a valuable lesson, dont use aggressive paste unless you know what your doing & dont rub too b****y hard!

Ps, just a thought, wonder if a rear spoiler would hide the damage on the tailgate?

    Many thanks again to all.
