    Default driveshaft popped out

i was changing the front struts on my cdti and the first side went fine but i managed to pop the driveshaft out of the outer cv

its started to rain so came in for the day, will it be a driveshaft off job to get it back in? im guessing theres a circlip inside the cv that needs opening

no , what should happen is when you stick the cv joint back onto the driveshaft the driveshaft has a chamfered edge which should engage inside the circlip and when you apply pressure it should open the circlip till the driveshaft will go onto it , the clicks into the groove on the shaft

cheers i tried to get it back on but that was without undoing the big retaining nut first, im guessing ill need to undo that first to get the cv to push far enough on

any idea on the size of the cv nut?

As Mark said some Cv's have a circlip that needs to be opened with circlip pliers - others can have a snap ring that allows you to pull it out or push it back in - it may be that you have the snap ring and you will be able to push it back in without removing the boot clip from the joint. Be very careful that you don't pull the joint to far apart and tear the boot or dislodge the boot clip

You may get away without removing the large driveshaft nut by reassembling everything and tapping the end of shaft with a with a hammer - but put something between the shaft and your hammer to protect it from damaging the shaft

Sorry missed that one - be very careful you don't get dirt inside the joint - is it a circlip or a snap ring.
