    Default VVt Cam Phaser Solenoids

I am having a few issues with the VVt, specifically it keeps throwing up Error codes for the cam solenoids. I have tried the field remedy by removing the filters, this helped slightly.

An error code suggested that the Inlet solenoid was not working, so I have changed that.

I am still getting error codes regarding the solenoids and have a "diesel death rattle" on start up. The car then runs for a short time and goes into limp mode. The last codes were

P0011 and P0014, suggesting I still have problems??

I have deleted these last codes and will wait for the EML again and check the new codes.

Can anyone make any suggestions? Could it be the cam position sensor and if so where are they located??

    Thanks

Thanks, I cleared the codes and ran the car until the EML came on, now it is only reading the P0014 code, so it looks like I also need to change the exhaust solenoid.

Strange how they both went at the same time?? Car has dopne 50k miles, maybe thats as long as they last??

Try removing the filters first and give the solenoids a clean with a blast of carb/brake cleaner. The filters can get blocked if the oil has not been changed regularily.

Otheriwse, simply change the the solenoids as you cannot strip the units.

Do you also get a top end rattle/knocking at start up and the EML? It progressively gets worse!!

Thanks for this thread Ben. I'm getting the rattle on start up (much worse than standard on 1.8 Vvt)

Will give the solenoids a clean first and go from there. Car has done 90k so timing belt water pump plus other bits need to be changed as well. I wonder if that is contributing to the noisy starts in the mornings also.

To Envy If the solenoids are sticking they starve the cams of oil, hence the rattle on start up. I would recommend trying the field remmedy first by taking the filters out, then if that doesnt work, simply replace the solenoids.

To antowens, you need to remember that the engine will perform checks at different times, depending on driving styles. Once you have switchd off, it will reset the EML, however the codes will still be held. I had similar reults after changing just one solenoid, car was much better, but hen the exhaust one failed.

I would recommend doing them ASAP.
