    Are you thinking of a 2.0/2.2DTi or a 1.9CDTi?
The 1.9CDTi seem to have more expensive problems, with Dual mass Flywheel being one.
I also do a low daily mileage and chose a 1.8VVTi, my first petrol car in about 20 years.
Yes more fuel costs per year, but it was about £2 less to buy than a similar diesel.
I get about 35mpg on a daily basis, going upto 45mpg on a long run if taking it easy.
Plus much less to go wrong in the DPF and DMF department, the CDTi's need hammering up and down the motorways to keep them sweet.
You dont have to have a lowly 1.8, the 2.0 turbo is supposed to be very nice.
The 1.8VVTi only starts feeling lively at about 3k revs, but i'm not a boy racer anyway.

It was a hard decision for me, but overall economics pointed at the petrol version.
Even if the fuel costs are £250 extra per year, it will take 8 years to match the extra costs of buying a diesel in the first place.
Rough figures i know, but you get the idea.
I also think my car goes better using Tesco Momentum Petrol, even if it costs a bit more, but the mpg has increased a bit.

Don't think your mileage would make it worth getting a diesel. They need to run warm. I run two 1.9 CDTI 150s and despite all the comments of issues I've never had any. all been serviced regularly with VX parts. They need to run warm. If you're only doing 10 miles to work and back, I imagine the car would only just have got to temperature when you turn it off. I think you'd be better off with the 1.8 VVT.
Loads cheaper to buy and the fuel is slightly cheaper, you need to be cracking 14,000 miles a year to make a diesel worth while, even though they go like stink in comparison to the 1.8 and pull like a train!

You just had to rub it in a bit...............

I have had a 2x 2.0DTi's and a 1.9CDTi 120 and the only real problem I had was a replacement Turbo on a DTi at 75,000. But lots of motorway miles in them.
