Try calling in-store at the local branch. I recently got a deal on a Lenovo that was out of stock online when I went into the branch at Braehead so you never know
You may want to steer clear of HP/Compaq at the moment - I've had numerous reports of problems due to design. I've been happy with Acers for many years now... good specs, easy to maintain, reliable and prices aren't too bad.
You need to choose either a 15" or 17" screen, but make sure it is a dual core and not Celeron.
If it is a family laptop sitting on a desk, then 17" is the way to go. If it is going to be permently plugged into the main, remove the battery to stop it cooking, but you still to run the battery down and recharge it every 2 months or so.
If it is going to be moved around and sat on the arm of a chair (like mine is right now) or a lap then either is good, but 15" might be a bit lighter. If it is going to be used on a lap, try and get one which has the hot air exhaust on the back and not on the bottom. This is to avoid burning your leg.
Both sizes should have a full keyboard and a number keyboard, mostly due to the fact both will be widescreen.
If you going to watch a lot of DVD's then look at ones which have seperate buttons to use the DVD player without having Windows running.
If your going to connect it to a TV or a modern monitor, get one with a HDMI output.
Also look at Argos outlet on ebay. I have bought 5 laptops and 2 TV's from Argos outlet and all have been as new.
For example the HP G6 you found before is here, with a £80 saving.

I use a Lenovo and have also bought another Lenovo and 3 Acer's, all of which are cracking machines, and have had no problems.
We now do not have a desktop, every one has a Laptop, all bought over a couple of years.

Acer give you a decent spec for a decent price. But if you have a problem within the warranty period their customer service is absolutely a nightmre. Purely for this reason I will never buy from them again after being a happy acer customer of previous laptops
http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_5750_1117488.html , here you go try this, im running this with an i5 proccesor and 5gb ram and its fast as ......lol never had any problems in the year ive had it and im sure currys is doing it cheaper , could be wrong lol
