    Default Engine Problems 1.9CDTI 150

Hi, after moving from the Astra to a fiat then to a Seat im now back with a good old vauxhall

iv got the 1.9CDTI engine 150BHP (i think not 100% on that yet just goin off what it says on insurance quotes) and i noticed to my horror today that the swirl vane rail had just been lying there on the top of the engine i drove a good 230miles on cruise control with it like this and still managed to get 65mpg some how.

Iv placed it back on but its not very secure it could easily just fall off again. They are all moving together again although the two closest the battery are all gunked up around them and looks fairly fresh is it known that seals go on these and i could be loosing boost through the tops of these vanes?

i would like to stick my Diesel tuning box back on from DTUK the green box but im affraid that the excess pressure is just going to leak out the top of these vanes anyway?

What are the long term effects of these vanes not working correctly usually?
When is it time to replace them?
How easy is it to take the inlet manifold off? does the timing belt cover have to come off to remove the Fuel pump to remove the inlet manifold?

Also power doesnt feel amazing would this be down to the swirl vanes as well or would that be the EGR also?

it seems to have a flat spot when i put my foot down between 1750 and 2000 it sort of stop delivering power then i get a burst after it gets through that flat spot.

    Thank in advanced

    Craig

First off, as you have the swirl rod it will be the 150.

You can't really repair it, it will ultimately need replacing, but you could glue them in the open position (10 o'clock IIRC) for a temp fix.

I personally wouldn't fit the tuning box until this has been sorted out one way or another. As the rod has come off, and a couple of the swirls have gunked up, the EGR valve will be caked too, this can be cleaned, but is best blanked so it won't feed the cack back in that caused this in the first place.

Long term effects are poor power, and if the swirls eventually stick in the closed position, you won't be able to use the car. You will be losing pressure through the top of the swirls too.

The flat spot you describe is typical of EGR/Manifold issues, you can't just stick your old EGR back on, it will need to be either a) cleaned thoroughly b) replaced or c) blanked.

    Hi there,

Sorry to kind of hijack the thread but does having the EGR Blanked mean that you will fail MOT on emissions?

Also to be back on topic my mate has a 150 that has the swirl valve problem and he has had the valves set in one position ( i guess as suggested above) he says he can't notice much difference.

Final thing can anyone actually describe what it is that actually breaks, snaps, deforms, corrodes, or deteriorates that allows the swirl bar to fall off in the fist place? (just for my interest) Thanks.

There is a post today which states an EML light on the dash (as you get when EGR is blanked) will not cause MOT failure. VOSA, apparently, had this in the pipeline but has yet to be introduced. Someone on here stated they phoned VOSA today and it was confrimed as such

    Hi there,

Yeah I seen the post you refer too and thanks for the response. However I mean that due to the fact that the EGR is supposed to reduce pollution then would blanking it mean you actually fail the emissions test regardless of any fault indication.? What do you think?

    Thanks in advance

Brilliant lol. Sounds like good news all round then.

How much normally would it cost in labour to do this job? I plan on doing it my self iv seen what it involves and it looks like a massive job.

The swirl valves are moving very easily at the minute so little chance there going to sieze close really but I would like this fixing ASAP I want the power. Im going to thoroughly clean the egr valve with ssome carb cleaner of some sort as its only a solenoid it shouldn't be too hard to sort.

If I was to block it but leave it plugged in would I still be faced with an eml light??

    Cheers Craig

    On the Cdti, Yes.

As for MOT emissions test, I believe it is only smoke density test for Diesels so EGR blanked or disconnected should not cause excessively more smoke than you had before this procedure. Therefore, IMO, it was was going to pass before blanking\disconnecting EGR, then it should still pass after.
