only 4 litres of new oil?

Today was oil changed day so armed with 5 litres of castral magnatc(1 x 4l,1 x 1l bottles) i drained the oil stuff off,changed oil filter and started off by putting the 4litres in first expecting to have to put half the 1 litre bottle in but the 4 litres filled it bang on the max mark.

I left the sump plug out for about 20 mins to make sure the old oil drained out properly and the car was on level ground so i dont understand why it only needed 4 litres and not the 4.5 as stated.

Ive cheked the oil level when the engine was cold and also after a good hour drive and it still the same level

I looked at your profile, but that didn't help much.

1.9 cdti there is a chance they could be some left in the engine as by the sounds of it you havnt warmed the oil up first before you drained it

Oh no - I feel the check your oil hot or cold debate coming on again lol

No not check it just before you drop any oils the engine should be warm so the oil is thin and comes out alot Easyer
