Default Service interval for all cars.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on how the service interval on cars are worked out. At work all of our bits of kit including diesel engines, seaboats and gas turbines all of the maintenance is carried out in accordance with the running hours.
I think this would be better suited for car engines due to the fact that although a car may only have say 30000 miles on it who says the engine hasn't been left running and sat in traffic for hours day on day which still causes wear and tear.

This came to me when getting an ice cream today and the engine was running to keep everything going but he wasn't going anywhere.

I reckon engine maintenance should be done by hours and all other done by miles.

    So what do you think?

Firstly, you'd have to differentiate between hours spent doing 160 kmh in Germany, or 60 mph here, or constant accelerating and braking in urban areas. Secondly, you're underestimating the influence large company fleets have in making manufacturers stretch their service intervals further and further.

You could have the same argument with mileage with regards to doing 160 or 60 and constant accelerating and braking.

It's your car, service it as often as you like, some people will service every 5000 miles others won't bother for years at a time. Who knows how it was cared for before you owned it if your not the first owner.

    Gas Turbines - Hours

    Internal Combustion engine - Miles

The longer a gas turbine runs, the more opportunity it has to have a foreign object pass through it and damage components. Hence why it's it's serviced on Hours
Internal Combustion engines, have very minimal chance of foreign object ingress. Wear is minimal if serviced correctly.

    Leave it as is...

When your sitting waiting for your ice cream there is no load on the engine so no actual wear. Look at agricultural engines, they clock up an hourly basis because they may not do many miles but are put under great load. My Vec is on the Eco service thing and finally it pinged up about 1 week before id owned it 2 years, and nearly 16k, this imo is unacceptable. I do oil and filter changes every 6 months, less than 4k. Ok this may be a bit ott, but imo it whats will lengthen the life span of the engine imo.

Maybe it's because Gas turbines don't 'go anywhere' and hence period of operation is needed as a measure. It is generally accepted that the more miles a car covers, is the same for the engine (and increase in wear and tear/oil use etc) hence it's interval is measured in miles/distance and not time. Fine the way it is. It is also worth noting that intervals are technically a guide and therefore if the engine is driven harder than anticipated by the manufacturer, intervals between services should be reduced.
